"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."
- Isaac Newton
Are you studying about Isaac Newton in school or via remote learning? Let's find out what made him so famous.
Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician who lived from 1642 to 1727. He made scientific breakthroughs in the sciences of optics, mechanics, and physics.
He invented the reflecting telescope and a type of advanced math called calculus. He also described the three laws of motion, which include:
- The First Law of Motion, that an "object in motion will continue to move in the same direction and speed unless forces act on it." This is also called inertia.
- The Second Law of Motion, that "the greater the mass of an object, the more force it will take to accelerate the object."
- And the Third Law of Motion, that "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

What will you need? Only a pen, pencil, or marker and a sheet of paper. Do you want to color your picture? Have your crayons handy.
Why is Isaac Newton holding an apple in our illustration? It's not an apple for the teacher, or an apple a day to keep the doctor away.
Newton is most famous for discovering gravity - that objects fall toward the center of the earth. It is rumored that his inspiration was seeing an apple fall from a tree.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Isaac Newton
1. Begin by sketching the features of Isaac Newton's face. Use curved lines to outline the eyes, contour the eyelids, and draw the eyebrows and nose. Then, shade a large circle inside each eye to indicate Isaac Newton's pupils.
2. Draw the smiling mouth using a curved line, with a shorter curved line at its corner. Then, outline Newton's face using a long curved line. Complete the outline by drawing his hair. Draw his fluffy powdered wig using a series of short curved lines.
3. Continue to draw the hair using a series of connected curved lines. Draw a line down the center of the head to indicate the part in the hair.
4. Begin drawing Newton's garments. Use curved lines to trace his scarf, the neck of his coat, his sleeve, and its large cuff.
5. Use overlapping curved lines to draw the hand, thumb, and fingers. Contour the knuckles with a short curved line. Then, draw an apple in his hand. Use a long curved line to outline the fruit. Extend another line from its top, and double it back upon itself to enclose the stem.
6. Use curved lines to outline the front of the coat and the sides of the legs. Draw a circle below the hand to indicate the coat's button.
7. Use curved lines to draw the remaining sleeve, cuff, hand, and fingers.
8. Use curved lines to complete the side and bottom of the pant leg. Extend two lines to form the leg, then use a curved line to trace the irregular shape of the shoe. On top of the shoe, draw a rounded rectangle within a rectangle, forming the metal buckle.
9. Enclose the remaining pant leg. Draw the leg, shoe, and rectangular buckle.
